About a week ago, we reported that according to rumors, Apple could be looking to build their own chips in New York. This would be a departure from Samsung who currently manufactures Appleâs AX chipsets in Texas, and according to a report by The Oregonian, it seems that Oregon might be interested in competing with New York to house the 3.2 million square foot facility which is said to employ at least 1,000 people. The project, which according to sources has been called âProject Azaleaâ, is by no means a secret. In our previous report Governor Andrew Cuomo basically confirmed this, although he did not reveal who would be building the factory, and who the factory would be producing for.
Some have suspected it would be a factory to build Appleâs AX chips, and those reports might not be too far off the mark. Apparently Project Azalea would be a factory built by TSMC, a company rumored in the past to have been approached by Apple to help build their chipsets. However TSMC did turn Apple down, supposedly not willing to dedicate their entire company to a single customer, although recent reports have suggested that the partnership is back on and that production could start earlier than expected. Either way weâll keep our eyes peeled for more information, so check back with us at a later date for the details.
