Sparx Systems Releases Profile for Esri® ArcGIS in Enterprise Architect

Sparx Systems, a leading vendor of visual modeling tools, has included the official release of a UML profile for ArcGIS in its launch of Enterprise Architect 9.3. The new Enterprise Architect profile for the ArcGIS 10 suite of tools by Esri Inc. enhances the way that architects and analysts work with geospatial databases.
The Sparx Systems' UML profile for ArcGIS is a new technology built on UML to design, build and share geodatabase schemas. Enterprise Architect provides a comprehensive toolset to build the ArcGIS models along with commonly used ArcGIS Workspace model templates. Models can be forward engineered to create the Workspace XML which is typically imported into ArcCatalog(TM). Legacy geodatabase schemas can be reverse engineered into Enterprise Architect to understand and document existing systems.
"This development reflects Sparx Systems' commitment to facilitating interoperability within the geospatial domain and is a practical extension of the strong relationship that the company enjoys with the global geospatial standards community through ISO/TC 211, OGC and CEN/TC 287," said Sparx Systems Business Development Manager, Ken Harkin.
In addition to the immediate benefits of modeling geospatial databases, this release helps to bridge the information gap between different domains, allowing geospatial components to be linked to requirements, system and business models. By bringing geospatial database design into a UML driven modeling repository, geodatabase designs can be created in a scalable environment based on open standards, linking to models and components in other domains and disciplines.
With the introduction of the Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect ArcGIS profile, geospatial experts are equipped with modeling tools to create and work with geodatabases as well as share and integrate their work with others.

Obama Administration Unveils “Big Data” Initiative: Announces $200 Million in New R&D Investments

Aiming to make the most of the fast-growing volume of digital data, the Obama Administration today announced a “Big Data Research and Development Initiative.” By improving our ability to extract knowledge and insights from large and complex collections of digital data, the initiative promises to help solve some the Nation’s most pressing challenges.

To launch the initiative, six Federal departments and agencies today announced more than $200 million in new commitments that, together, promise to greatly improve the tools and techniques needed to access, organize, and glean discoveries from huge volumes of digital data.

“In the same way that past Federal investments in information-technology R&D led to dramatic advances in supercomputing and the creation of the Internet, the initiative weare launching today promises to transform our ability to use Big Data for scientific discovery, environmental and biomedical research, education, and national security,” said Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

To make the most of this opportunity, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)—in concert with several Federal departments and agencies—created the Big Data Research and Development Initiative to:

Advance state-of-the-art core technologies needed to collect, store, preserve, manage, analyze, and share huge quantities of data.
Harness these technologies to accelerate the pace of discovery in science and engineering, strengthen our national security, and transform teaching and learning; and
Expand the workforce needed to develop and use Big Data technologies.
Today’s initiative responds to recommendations by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, which last year concluded that the Federal Government is under-investing in technologies related to Big Data. In response, OSTP launched a Senior Steering Group on Big Data to coordinate and expand the Government’s investments in this critical area. Today’s announcement describes the first wave of agency commitments to support this initiative, including:

National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health - Core Techniques and Technologies for Advancing Big Data Science & Engineering

“Big Data” is a new joint solicitation supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that will advance the core scientific and technological means of managing, analyzing, visualizing, and extracting useful information from large and diverse data sets. This will accelerate scientific discovery and lead to new fields of inquiry that would otherwise not be possible. NIH is particularly interested in imaging, molecular, cellular, electrophysiological, chemical, behavioral, epidemiological, clinical, and other data sets related to health and disease.

In addition to its funding of the Big Data solicitation, NSF is also:

Encouraging research universities to develop interdisciplinary graduate programs to prepare the next generation of data scientists and engineers;
Funding a $10 million project based at the University of California, Berkeley, that will integrate three powerful approaches for turning data into information - machine learning, cloud computing, and crowd sourcing;
Providing the first round of grants to support “EarthCube” – a system that will allow geoscientists to access, analyze and share information about our planet;
Issuing a $2 million award for a research training group to support training for undergraduates to use graphical and visualization techniques for complex data.
Providing $1.4 million in support for a focused research group of statisticians and biologists to tell us about protein structures and biological pathways.
Convening researchers across disciplines to determine how Big Data can transform teaching and learning.
Department of Defense – Data to Decisions:

The Department of Defense (DoD) is “placing a big bet on big data” investing $250 million annually (with $60 million available for new research projects) across the Military Departments in a series of programs that will:

Harness and utilize massive data in new ways and bring together sensing, perception and decision support to make truly autonomous systems that can maneuver and make decisions on their own.
Improve situational awareness to help warfighters and analysts and provide increased support to operations. The Department is seeking a 100-fold increase in the ability of analysts to extract information from texts in any language, and a similar increase in the number of objects, activities, and events that an analyst can observe.
To accelerate innovation in Big Data that meets these and other requirements, DoD will announce a series of open prize competitions over the next several months.

In addition, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is beginning the XDATA program, which intends to invest approximately $25 million annually to develop computational techniques and software tools for analyzing large volumes of data, both semi-structured (e.g., tabular, relational, categorical, meta-data) and unstructured (e.g., text documents, message traffic). Central challenges to be addressed include:

Developing scalable algorithms for processing imperfect data in distributed data stores; and
Creating effective human-computer interaction tools for facilitating rapidly customizable visual reasoning for diverse missions.
The XDATA program will support open source software toolkits to enable flexible software development for users to process large volumes of data in timelines commensurate with mission workflows of targeted defense applications.

National Institutes of Health – 1,000 Genomes Project Data Available on Cloud:

The National Institutes of Health is announcing that the world’s largest set of data on human genetic variation – produced by the international 1000 Genomes Project – is now freely available on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) computing cloud. At 200 terabytes – the equivalent of 16 million file cabinets filled with text, or more than 30,000 standard DVDs – the current 1000 Genomes Project data set is a prime example of big data, where data sets become so massive that few researchers have the computing power to make best use of them. AWS is hosting the 1000 Genomes Project as a publically available data set for free and researchers only will pay for the computing services that they use.

Department of Energy – Scientific Discovery Through Advanced Computing:

As part of its Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing program, the Department of Energy will provide $25 million in funding for the Scalable Data Management, Analysis and Visualization Institute. Led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Institute will bring together the expertise of six National Laboratories and seven universities, with the goal of developing new and improved tools to help scientists manage and visualize data. The need for these new tools has grown as the simulations running on the Department of Energy’s supercomputers have increased in size and complexity.

US Geological Survey – Big Data for Earth System Science:

USGS is announcing the latest awardees for grants it issues through its John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis. The Center catalyzes innovative thinking in Earth system science by providing scientists a place and time for in-depth analysis, state-of-the-art computing capabilities, and collaborative tools invaluable for making sense of huge data sets. These Big Data projects will improve our understanding of issues such as species response to climate change, earthquake recurrence rates, and the next generation of ecological indicators.

European And International LiDAR Mapping Forum Dates Announced

What a year it has been for the LiDAR Mapping Forum Series run by Intelligent Exhibitions. Not only did the 2nd outing of the European version wow audiences, once again establishing its popularity within the industry calendar but the International Forum based in the US set a new record for attendees!

On the back of all the recent success, the organisers are excited to announce the dates for both events with the European LiDAR Mapping Forum (ELMF) returning to Salzburg in Austria from 4-5 December 2012 and the International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF) returning to Denver, Colorado in the US from February 11-13, 2013.

It is a welcome return to Salzburg for ELMF, when in 2011 it moved there from The Hague in the Netherlands and the new venue earned so much positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike that the organisers are delighted to return there for a second year. Director of ELMF, Versha Carter, explains, “We have been overwhelmed by delegates telling us how wonderful the venue was last year in Salzburg. The open-plan layout of the Congress building brought everyone together and was wellliked by delegates and exhibitors. Salzburg’s central location in Europe may have contributed to the increase in visitors from Eastern Europe, which is an important consideration for next year’s venue.
Salzburg also provided a special dimension with its Christmas markets that delegates were able to enjoy, as well as the drinks reception on the opening night which was very popular for networking.”

There were over 445 attendees from 40 different countries and interestingly, there were almost twice as many visitors from Eastern Europe as the first event. Across the water in the States, ILMF set a new record for attendees in January this year, when 773 professionals from 29 different countries turned up in droves for the 12th annual event. This proved once again that LIDAR, in its increasing variety of operational formats, is becoming the technology of choice for fast, accurate and quality geospatial data acquisition. Whether supporting highly detailed 3D urban mapping projects, forestry management, or railroad and power transmission line maintenance programs, LIDAR technology delivers the results needed by today’s demanding geospatial and mapping professionals.

Conference Chairman of both events, Alastair MacDonald of TMS International, believes each event producesconference programmes that represent a thriving community: “The quality of the paperspresented at both events was outstanding. The highly positive reaction to the topics from the delegates, which included many newcomers as end-users of LIDAR data, showed how important and relevant the chosen subjects were to the fast growing LIDAR community.”

In the coming weeks, the organisers will be launching a Call for Papers for both events whereby prospective authors will be able to submit their abstracts online, all of which will be peer reviewed by the Technical Committee of leading industry experts from across the spectrum of the LIDAR community, and both programmes will be announced later this year.

Running alongside both conferences will once again be the major exhibitions with more than 50 leading companies expected who will demonstrate new LIDAR products and a wide range of new technologies and services. Exhibitors historically include the LIDAR and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile mapping vehicles. There will also be a series of LIDAR and associated systems workshop sessions available once again for delegates.

Janina Milner, first time exhibitor with Oxford Technical Solutions at ELMF said, “ELMF provided us with a great platform for showing our systems to key players in the industry. We were able to network with business partners, get feedback from existing customers and generate a great amount of promising sales leads. ELMF far exceeded our expectations and we'll definitely re-book our stand for the 2012 conference.”

Whilst Adam Hill of Blue Marble Geographics commented that, “Bottom line - the ILMF has become and will continue to be the premier LIDAR conference event that all organizations in this industry must attend.”
About the LiDAR Mapping Forums

The International and European LiDAR Mapping Forums are the premier global events focused on applying the technology of LIDAR and laser scanning to deliver outside mapping and imaging solutionsin a timely and cost-effective manner across a variety of markets. The core component of both events is the conference which introduces the latest concepts from commercial or academic research, leading edge innovations in technologies, improved operating practices, reports on actual project experiences and discusses new applications and markets being driven by the rapid improvements in LIDAR technology. During the conference the programme will focus on the use of LIDAR to support transport, urban modelling, coastal zone mapping, asset management and GIS applications. An international exhibition runs alongside the conferences with exhibitors involved in airborne, bathymetric and terrestrial LIDAR and mobile mapping systems, including system and component manufacturers, operators and service companies

GEO-12 Seminar Programme Announced

Organisers of the UK’s only geospatial trade exhibition  have just released details of the seminar programme that will run alongside the  ‘sell out’ event. The two day programme of topical seminars and workshops will  include a focus on Building Information Management (BIM), exploration of new  tools for data collection including UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and crowd sourcing as well as assessment of global satellite navigation systems (GNSS).
Special workshop sessions will include a laser scanning clinic and an open floor  debate looking at the next edition of the Royal Institution of Chartered  Surveyors (RICS) guidance on land surveying.
The sell-out GEO-12  exhibition, taking place on the 21st and 22nd of March 2012 at the Holiday Inn,  London Elstree, is completely free to attend.
Annual attendee numbers of 600 or  more are attracted by a delegate package that includes free onsite parking and  refreshments, a stimulating programme of free seminars and workshops and live  product demos. In addition, those wishing to extend their stay can complement  their experience with a ticket for the event’s Gala Dinner sponsored by KOREC  and Trimble, topping the evening off with a great deal on overnight  accommodation.
The two-day programme of seminars and workshops is  designed to complement the geospatial focus of the exhibition. Building  Information Management is a topical issue driven by government requirements for  all public sector contracts of £10 million or over to be undertaken using BIM by  2015. A dedicated seminar session will explore the relationship between BIM and  geospatial technologies and look at some of the opportunities and solutions that  are coming to market.

About GRASS GIS
The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS, is an Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) and geospatial analysis toolkit. For nearly three decades, GRASS has provided powerful raster, vector, and geospatial processing engines in a single integrated software suite. GRASS includes tools for spatial modeling of raster and vector data, visualization, the management and analysis of geospatial information, and the processing of satellite and aerial imagery. It also provides the capability to produce sophisticated presentation graphics and publication-quality hardcopy maps. GRASS has now been translated into twenty languages and supports an extensive array of data formats. It is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
GRASS differs from many other GIS software packages used in the academic and professional worlds in that it is developed and distributed by users for users, mostly on a volunteer basis. Its code and spatial processing algorithms are open and transparent, and the software is distributed free of charge. The source code is also freely available, allowing for immediate customization, examination of the underlying algorithms, the addition of new features, and faster identification and patching of bugs.

OGC Announces Smart Grid Location Standards Ad Hoc Meeting

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) invites Smart Grid professionals to a Smart Grid Location Standards Meeting to be held on March 20 from 8:00-10:00 a.m. at the OGC Technical Committee Meeting in Austin, Texas, USA. This meeting is sponsored/hosted by the OGC, in cooperation with the University of Texas at Austin.
The ability to communicate geospatial information is seen as a crosscutting requirement in Smart Grid standards efforts worldwide. The OASIS eMIX (Energy Market Information Exchange) standard uses the OGC Geography Markup Languate (GML) Encoding Standard. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) CIM (Common Information Model) standard is "harmonized" with WXXM (Weather Information Exchange Model), which is an industry profile based on GML. More standards coordination and development, however, is required to enable efficient geospatial communication within smart grids and between smart grids and "neighboring" activities such as emergency response, disaster management, urban planning and building energy management.
Many of the OGC's domains of activity – sensor webs, weather, indoor/outdoor location integration, 3D city models, location services, data fusion and others – have significance for the Smart Grid. Many OGC members have a stake in the Smart Grid information technology market, the growth of which depends on the evolution of a standards infrastructure that includes location standards.
This meeting (an "ad hoc" meeting in the OGC's formal meeting nomenclature) has been set up to assess the level of interest in the community to tackle open geospatial standards for the Smart Grid. It is expected that OGC member participants will agree on near and intermediate term actions, which may include the drafting of a Smart Grid Domain Working Group charter.
The Smart Grid Location Standards Ad Hoc meeting is open to the public and admission is free, but Smart Grid Location Standards Ad Hoc Meeting attendees who don't plan to attend other OGC Technical Committee sessions must register via email at register@opengeospatial.org. See details of the OGC Technical Committee meeting at http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/1203tc.
OGC staff and Eric Nelson of Synaptitude Consulting will facilitate the meeting. We hope you will attend
