Search engine optimization (SEO) predominantly falls into two areas, onpage SEO and offpage SEO. If both are properly done, then your SEO efforts will likely see some good results, but only one is done without the other, then frankly, you are wasting your time.
Offpage SEO certainly takes the most time and effort, but your first task is to effect good onpage SEO for every page you wish to market. This is fairly simple to do (once you have the appropriate keywords to campaign for), and it follows a simple formula that each page should nicely follow. The proper formatting allows the search engines to better understand what your web page is about, and thus index it appropriately.
Your Onpage SEO Checklist:
1. Research keyword phrases, one for each page. This will form the basis of your optimization. Try and find ten phrases to apply to ten web pages to start with.
2. Try and choose keywords that have high searches, and low competition. These keywords are extremely hard to find now, so you will likely have to choose lower searched for terms with slightly higher competition. Alternatively, use long tail keywords (these are keyword phrases with four or more words to them, eg 'how to properly optimize a web page' is a long tail keyword).
It's also a good idea, if you can have your main keyword (the keyword that is to be optimized on your home page) as your domain name. This can really help SEO for that term.
Placement of Keywords
3. Next, these keyword phrases need to be strategically placed on each page.
4. The keyword needs to be present in the document title and meta description in the header section of your web page.
5. In the body, the keyword phrase should appear in the following places:
i. header tags (h1, h2, h3 etc)
ii. within the content, perhaps 2-3% of the body text
iii. try to place keyword phrase in first paragraph and last paragraph of the content
iv. also try and use LSI (Latent Search Index), this is essentially other keywords directly relating to your main keyword on the page
v. within file names of any media (images, video etc) on the page, including their alt tagsvi/ anchor text (links) to other pages on your site
Another important factor in onoage SEO is to include a site map. You can view most website's sitemaps at a name such as sitemap dot xml, try visiting houston web design and see if you can find our sitemap. This is extremely useful and the spiders crawling your site can take advantage of this simple file which contains the information of the structure of your site. Adding a site map can make a significant difference to rankings in the search engines.
Use Clean Coding
The structure of each web page should be of proper quality and formatting. There should be no coding errors at all in each page, and the layout and format should be efficient and simple for the spiders to crawl through to obtain their information. No web page should really be any more than 100kb in size. For a great example of clean coding head on over to houston web designers and then right click with your mouse, and then look for the link for view source which will allow you to see the html code and how cleanely it's laid out.
Hopefully, this onpage SEO checklist should provide a good insight into how to optimize a web page. Once you have optimized a couple of pages, the process will be quicker, and eventually second nature to you, meaning that you will be able to optimize quickly in the future.
